Plastics

Thought I would highlight D.C.'s effective strategy to reduce the use of plastic grocery bags.

After DC imposed a 5 cent tax on plastic bags this January, the number of plastic bags in supermarkets and other establishments dropped from a monthly average of 22.5 million to 3 million in January.

The tax generated $150,000 in revenue, which will be used to clean up the Anacostia River. The main story is the reduction of the trash heaps of plastic bags, keeping pollution from the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

22.5 million to 3 million! Phenomenal impact!
